ABOUT
Photographed in April, 2006 during the build-up to the nation's General election 'Postcards' began with a vague idea about photographing the Fiji Labour Party leader Mahendra Chaudhry on the campaign trail.

The resulting road trip quickly morphed into a muddled journey through the 'sugar cane belt' of Western Viti Levu, a trip to Beqa Island with the military's Truth and Justice campaign, and was followed by political rallies in Suva.

The confusing miasma that is Fiji's intricately crafted political landscape does not give up answers easily and the resulting photo-essay is more a record of this state than any definitive statement of the pre-election situation.

Blending a "tourist snapshot" aesthetic with photos of the three major factions (the FLP, the SDL and the military),this essay seeks to place the political within a wider social landscape, and, in doing so suggest a more complex picture of contemporary Fiji.
