I spent August in Manila city working on a new approach to documenting music, culture and social issues. Titled “What’s Your Issue” the series takes the issues embedded in music and explores the local context behind them. Episode 2 focussed on 2 groups response to the extrajudicial killings that have taken place in the first 3 years of President Duterte’s rule and talked to punk band THE EXSENADORS and hip hop collective SANDATA.
What’s Your Issue EP01: The Right To The City. As part of the Up The Punks project I’ve been looking at punk in the Philippines and the issues behind the music. This first episode talks to Quezon city punk band CATPUKE and explores the issues faced by the urban poor in Manila when they come up against the largest corporation in the Philippines.
