AFFCO Talleys Meatworkers lockout

In mid-April I traveled to Ngaruawahia to record some of the locked out workers from Talleys-Affco’s Horotiu freezing works singing their re-worded version of the old Jamaican folk song Day-O (the banana boat song) first made famous in the 1950s by the “King of Calypso" Harry Belafonte. At the time approximately 900 unionised workers across the country had been locked out since February 29, 2012 with negotiations between Talley’s management and the Meat Workers Union now set for government facilitation.
